Internet Explorer 6.0 Browser Setting Checklist for the PC running Windows Me, 2000, or XP.

Note: Make sure you are using the latest version of Internet Explorer and have all critical security patches installed by going to Tools - Windows Update.

You can also configure your computer to automatically check for, download, and install critical security updates by subscribing to JMU's Software Update Service. For information, see http://www.jmu.edu/computing/security/sus.shtml

All of these following options are under the Tools - Internet Options menu item in Internet Explorer.

  1. Advanced Tab Settings:
    • Click Tools - Internet Options
    • Select the Advanced tab
    • Under Browsing, uncheck/turn OFF the "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts" checkbox
    • Under Browsing, uncheck/turn OFF the "Enable third-party browser extensions" checkbox (Required for Oracle Calendar/Portal)
    • Under Browsing, uncheck/turn OFF the "Show friendly HTTP error messages" checkbox (Required for Oracle Calendar/Portal)
    • Under Browsing, check/turn ON the "Show friendly URLs" checkbox
      (Required for Oracle Calendar/Portal)
    • Scroll down to the Security section and make sure the "Use SSL 2.0" and "Use SSL 3.0" check boxes are checked ON. More details: Enable SSL
    • Click OK button.
  2. Disable AutoComplete / Content Tab Settings:
    • Click Tools - Internet Options
    • Select the Content tab
    • Click AutoComplete button
    • Unselect / uncheck all boxes under Use AutoComplete for all items.
    • Click the Clear Forms button. Click OK when asked "Clear all previously saved form entries except passwords?"
    • Click the Clear Passwords button. Click OK when asked "Clear all previously saved passwords?"
    • Click OK button twice.

  3. Security Tab Settings:
    • Click Tools - Internet Options
    • Select Security Tab
    • Set the security level for each of the web content zones to Default Level. For each of the following zones, click the zone icon, then click the Default Level button:
      • Local Intranet (Computer and globe icon)
      • Trusted Sites (Checkmark in green circle icon)
      • Restricted Sites (Minus sign in red circle icon)
      • Note: If the Default Level button is grayed out for any of these zones, this means that the Default Level is already set.
    • Add JMU to Trusted Sites:
      • Click on the Trusted Sites web content zone (checkmark in green circle icon) and click the Sites button.
      • Type https://*.jmu.edu in the field "Add this Web site to the zone" and click the Add button.
      • Click OK button.
    • Ensure Downloads are enabled:
      • Click on the Trusted Sites web content zone (checkmark in green circle icon) and click the Custom Level button.
      • Under Automatic prompting for file downloads, select the Enable option.
      • Click OK button.
    • Ensure JavaScript is enabled:
      • Click on the Internet web content zone and click the Custom Level button.
      • Under Active scripting, Allow paste operation via script, and Scripting of Java applets, select the Enable option for all three.
      • Click OK button.

    • Click OK button.
  4. Privacy Tab Settings:
    • Click Tools - Internet Options
    • Select Privacy Tab
    • Click Default Button. Note: If the Default button is grayed out, this means that the Default is already set.
    • Click Ok
  5. Clear Cache: Cache Settings / General Tab settings:
    • Click Tools - Internet Options
    • Select General Tab
    • Click the Settings Button under Temporary Internet Files grouping
    • Set Check for newer versions of stored pages to - Every Visit to the page. More Details: Set Caching to Every Visit to the page
    • Click Ok
    • Delete all cookies by clicking Delete Cookies button in Temporary Internet Files grouping and Clicking Ok.
    • Delete all offline content by Clicking Delete Files Button under Temporary Internet Files grouping and Check ON checkbox for Delete all offline content and click Ok
    • Clear History by clicking the Clear History button under the History grouping.
    • Click Yes to the Are you sure question.
    • Click Ok
    • Enable Cookies in IE 6.0
  6. Pop-up Blocker Settings for Microsoft Pop-up Blocker NEW in Windows XP Service Pack 2:
    • Click Tools, Pop-up Blocker, Pop-up Blocker Settings…
    • Type *.jmu.edu into the Address of Web site to allow field and click the Add button
    • Select the Medium:Block most automatic pop-ups filter level in the drop down at the bottom of this page
    • Click the Close Button and close your browser and start a new browser up.
  7. Language Settings
    • Click Tools - Internet Options
    • On the General Tab, Click the Languages button on the bottom.
    • Use the Move Up to move English to the top of the list of Languages or Add to add it to the list.
    • Click Ok twice, close your browser, then open it again.
  8. Check your computer's System Time, Date(including year). Ensure that your Date/Time settings reflect the actual geographical time zone where you are located and that your time is correct (Instructions). If you are using an older machine, ensure that you patch your machine for Daylight Savings Time.
  9. Close Internet Explorer and restart it, then try the application you were using again.
  10. If these steps do not work, try rebooting your machine and trying to access the application again.
