1) How do I authorize JMU send me emergency notifications via J-ESS? You authorize JMU to send you emergency notifications via text or voice message using the Phone page located in J-ESS. You access the phone page by clicking the Phone Numbers link located in the Personal Information section on the main JMU Employee Self Service page. If you are a student employee you must provide authorization via e-Campus instead of J-ESS.

BACK

2) Who will receive emergency notification? JMU will send emergency notifications to you if you are an active faculty/staff member and you have authorized JMU to contact you via cell phone.

BACK

3) How do I opt-in to receive text messages? You must provide a text-enabled cell phone number and authorize JMU to send you emergency notification using e-campus (students) or J-ESS (employees). You will then automatically receive a confirmation text message from JMU Madison Alerts (SMS Shortcode 23177) within 24 hours on your cell phone confirming your request.

4) I did not receive a confirmation message. What happened? Please check with your mobile phone provider to find out if your device accepts text messages. You may also want to check with your provider to see if text messaging has been enabled. You may need to subscribe to a text messaging plan in order to receive or reply to text messages.

5) If I sign up at night, when will I receive the confirmation text message? The emergency notification system is updated each night at midnight. You will receive the confirmation text message between 1pm and 9pm (ET) the following calendar day.

BACK

6) Do I need to reply to the Confirmation Message that I receive? No. The JMU Madison Alerts emergency notification system no longer requires you to respond to the confirmation text message.

BACK

7) How do I opt-out? You may opt-out at any time using e-campus (students) or J-ESS (employees) to remove the authorization for JMU to send you emergency notifications. Authorization is revoked by ‘unchecking’ the authorization box located on the Phone Number page.

8) What if I opted-out of text messaging but later decide I would like to opt-in again? You may opt-in for text messaging by authorizing JMU send you emergency notifications via e-campus (students) or J-ESS (faculty and staff). You must also text message ‘SUBSCRIBE JMU’ to SMS Shortcode 23177. You will then receive a confirmation text message. You must reply by sending “YES JMU” to confirm your request.

BACK

9) If I change cell phone providers do I need to opt-in again? No. Once your phone number has been opted-in, it stays registered within the system.

BACK

10) Why was I directed to the disclaimer page when I logged into J-ESS? You received the disclaimer page because you need to either elect to receive emergency notifications from JMU Madison Alerts using your cell phone or elect to not receive emergency notifications.

BACK

11) I was routed to the Phone Numbers page, what do I do now? You need to make your notification election using the radio buttons located on the Emergency Notification Authorization section of the page.
